BLOG 1--The One To Get Away

The One To Get Away

The title of chapter one is The One To Get Away.  Who do you believe is the character to "get away" and why do you believe this?  Be sure you are thoughtful in your response.

  1. I believe the character to get away is Missy. Why I think she is the one to get away is because she truly believed tat she could make it in the world. She wanted to get away from the old, slow, grumpy town of Kentucky and become something and learn new things. Also, since Missy had her mother to back her up and support her, it made her better understand that it's ok to try new things and go to different places. Having a positive person like that in Missy's life really helped her to see that having a father isn't half bad, because her mother taught her all she needed to know.
Furthermore, another example is how she changed her name. She just wanted to change it to begin a new start in her life. How she changed her name? Coming to the nearest city and naming herself that. She trusted in herself and in her future to become what she wanted to become. She got away from what normal people did in her old town, and became what she wanted to be.

    1. I like this comment because she gives me an understand to why Missy is the character to get away. This gives a clear explanation to what Missy's reasons were to why she wanted to get away. If I was someone who didn't read chapter 1, this comment would help me know a brief introduction to what is going on in the story.

    2. I like this response because it explains why Missy went away because of the old life in Kentucky. This response also talks about Missy's family, talking about her supportive mother who influences Missy to try out new things. Then it summarizes up her reason for leaving in the last sentence.

  2. I believe that Missy is the character to get away. In the story, it talks about these people and how they have given up on themselves. Then it talks about Missy and how she still pushes herself to do better and make something of herself. She kept going to school because she wanted to finish and didn't want to a future as "a tobacco farmer's wife." She worked at the hospital to stay out of trouble and eventually left Kentucky all together. She also changed her name, which, to me, truly shows how much she wanted to leave behind her old life and get away.

    1. i like this response b/c it compares how different taylor is from all the other girls in her town and how hard she worked to get away from the norm.

  3. I believe that the character to get away was the little Indian girl given to Missy by a random woman at the bar. Although the girl didn't have control of physically "getting away", the woman gave the child to someone who looked decent enough to take care of her. She may have stayed quiet at first in the car, but as soon as Missy gave the the little girl a bath, she soon discovered that this small, innocent child was covered with horrible bruises all over her body. Missy knew that she couldn't let go of her after seeing this. Also, the young Indian girl had grown an attachment to Missy, as if she were longing for someone to take care of her with love and care. By then, the girl knew she was in better hands and in a secure place to stay.

  4. The character that is the one to "get away" was Missy. I believed that she was the one fit for this is because of how she wanted to leave her poor city in Kentucky. From working in a hospital named, "Pittman County Hospital," she worked full-time to buy a '55 Volkswagen specifically to move away from Kentucky and to move west. With the addition changing her name, she wanted to make a new life that isn't like of that in Kentucky. When having to leave the old life, she brings a new one from starting from having a baby from an old woman from a bar. In the end of the chapter, Missy wrote to her mother, "I found my head rights," mean she found some kind of freedom and change in her life.

  5. In this story, I believe that the character that is trying to get away is Missy. In the chapter, we learn that she is hardworking and believes she can do better in life unlike the Hardbine's and most of the girls who get pregnant. She explains how when she was in high school, she got her first job. She helped her mom with the rent and bills and managed to save some money for herself as well. She also stayed in school. She mentions how she wasn't the smartest or outstanding but that she was there to stay out of trouble. She even intends to finish. She was not one to follow the crowd. She states that her mom knew that barefoot and pregnant was not her style. With her money, she bought a '55 Volkswagen bug. When she took it home, she mentions her mom knew that, "she was going to get away." MIssy leaves Kentucky and heads west. There she leaves her old life and begins a new life with new challenges. She even decides to change her name to Taylor Greer. This symbolizes the fact that changing her name, is the start to a new beginning. As a start to her new life, an old woman from the bar gives Taylor a baby to take care of. When she realizes that this baby is just a sweet child with a numerous amount of bruises, she begins to have an attachment with her. This symbolizes the fact that she is getting away from her old life, and she will soon begin a new life with this young child.

    2. I like your response the most because you really explain exactly why you think Missy is the one to get away without going off topic. You explain your thoughts really well.

  6. I believe the character to "get away" is Missy. She had a plan and that plan was, "to drive out of Pittman County one day and never look back, except maybe Mam" (11). She did this to get out of her poor city and leave Kentucky. Missy had better plans for herself because her mother praised her and by saying "barefoot and pregnant was not my style" (3). She escaped Kentucky with her messed up '55 Volkswagen to get a new job, one that didn't involve her counting red blood cell platelets. It was not until the end when the chapter concluded that she escaped when she was given the baby to take care of. It was at this moment that now she had started a whole new life, having to take care of a baby.

  7. I believe the character that is trying to "get away" is Missy/Taylor. From the beginning she had a plan to leave her poor county "Pittman County," With many bad influences such as girls dropping out of high school and giving up in life. Missy with all she faces still decides to stay in high school and finish it. She gets a job at the Pittman County Hospital where she worked for 4 to 5 years and raised enough money to support her mother with her house bills and even make money to support herself by buying a new car '55 Volkswagen". Once she bought herself a car she was gone for good. She left Pittman County with her car and off she went leaving Kentucky and heading West. She also gets a new identity and name Taylor after the city where her gas runs out Taylorville which also shows herself moving on in life and beginning a new life and hopefully having a future ahead of her.
I also believe that the little Indian Girl/baby given to Missy towards the end of the chapter by a Old Woman at a bar was also the character to get away because she was given away by the Old woman for a reason so that the girl could have a new life ahead of her. Since the little Indian girl was bruised and or maybe assaulted or abused, the old woman thought that giving the baby away to someone else will change the little girl's life and the fact she could have a future ahead of her. The Old woman also might have given away the little Indian girl so that she could move on in life and "get away as well"

  8. I believe Missy is the character to "get away". Since she changes her name and leaves her city. Those two plots explain that she tends to get away and finding a place that can give her a new start of life. Missy has been seen too many chaotic and dirty things happened around her life and her city including the pregnancy of girls and the spreading of illnesses. In addition, she saw Newt's death showing the enormous pressure on him. This is the turning point that changed Missy's mind, she doesn't want to escape her life and just wants to prove that she can change it. But she is the people who actually gets away from the horrible environment and becomes independent. Her mama and she are poor, so she has to leave because this is the only way that can make her find a way to change her life.

    1. I like your response because of how you similarly made your statements just like an essay format. It also points the setting that Missy was currently in that made her move away.

  9. I believe that Missy is the character to get away because she is nothing like everyone else her age. They drop out of school and give up hope on life, while she gets a job as a nurse and wants to finish school. She wants to make something out of her life after seeing all the bad influences and Newt's death. She had worked at the hospital for almost five years now and has made enough money to support her mother and buy her own car. After getting the car she was now leaving Pittman Country and starting fresh.

  10. To me, the one to "Get away" is Missy because she thinks she is not getting anywhere in life. She drops out of school to pursue a job at the hospital, counting platelets and nothing else. Then Jolene comes in along with Newt and he dies, while Jolene lives with some insanity in her voice. Missy sees the pain Jolene is in, and after seeing this, decides to buy a worn-down car and run away. Her mother tries to hold her back, but id doesn't stop her. She leaves her home place and starts anew to look for a better life and a better future, and in doing so leads her to change her name and have a child along for the ride.

  11. "The one to get away" is Missy or Taylor Greer. All her life, she saw the other girls getting pregnant and/or marrying young, and Missy knew she didn't want that kind of life. She knew that she wouldn't be satisfied being married to a poor farmer. Missy took the time to finish high school and get a real job, which she stayed with for a few years. When she was good and ready, she bought herself a car and started driving as far west as she could. Even though Missy's mother tried to hold her back with every excuse she could think of, Missy leaves.Missy knew that she would be able to live and completely happy life if she stayed in the town she was born and raised in. On her way out of a diner/bar, and Indian lady leaves a child with her. This sort of symbolizes the start of Missy's new life. Missy even changed her own name to Taylor Greer. Both of these mark the beginning of her new life, and the meaning of "the one to get away".

    1. I liked your blog because it showed a lot of detail and made me think of somethings I never thought about before. I never thought that the little Indian girl could have been a symbol of a new life because I always thought she symbolized child abuse and getting away from that abuser.

    2. I like this response because it has good explanation to way Missy/Taylor was the one to get away. I also liked how this response used things from the story to symbolize her getting away.

  12. I believe in the story that Missy and the baby girl are the ones to get away. Missy being surrounded by woman who drop out of school and count on men to give them everything she survives. Missy does not drop out of high school because of her mom. Her mom tells her all the time that she is different from these girls and that is not what is going to happen to her. Having Missy mom constantly tell Missy that she is that turns Missy into that type of person. Unlike the girl named Jolene who dropped of school, got pregnant, got beaten up because of her boyfriend that is dead, Jolene dad was negative towards her. Calling her a Hoe constantly and that made her a hoe. Missy becomes successful in Kentucky but wants to explore starting with her first name. Missy believes that her destiny will take her places where she truly belongs. She strongly believes in herself thanks to her supporting mom who will always be there giving her positive energy to feed off of. I Believe Missy wants to get away and explore the world because she feels trapped in Kentucky and she is the one of the only successful girls. I believe the Little Indian girl has a hidden story to her that she is trying to escape. She has bruises all over her body but still has a joyful spirit. The child could be running away from a bunch of things. Maybe a brutal father, a dishonor to the family, a mistake, or even the child is used to take out the anger of a family member because the family member think it’s the baby fault that the mom is dead.

  13. There are two people who "get away" in the first chapter. I think they are Missy and the Indian Girl. The First one to get away was Missy. Missy started out poor in a town in Kentucky. It was also a time when your gender did matter. Missy was a poor, female who stood out from all the other girls. She was very tenacious. When all the other girls dropped out of high school, Missy wanted none of that, and continued. In her senior year, she got a job from her teacher working at the nearby hospital. She used this job as a way to stay out of trouble, and learned who she really did not want to be like. For example, she did not want to become Jolene Hardbine, a women who is stuck in that town forever and cannot do anything about it. She worked in that hospital for 5 1/2 years and eventually raised enough money to pay for her mom's bills and get herself a car. With that car, she left and never looked back. She changed her name to Taylor, which was a symbol of a new beginning. Missy, long gone out of her old town, gets the responsibility of getting a little Indian Girl, who is the next person who gets away. When Missy was giving the Indian girl a bath, she saw the bruises on her body. From the look of these bruises, it seemed as if the girl was physically abused. Missy took her in and took care of her, which I think was helping the Indian girl "get away" from her past nightmare and abuser.

    1. I agree with this answer because i didn't take into consideration that the Indian girl was also "the one to get away". Clearly the Indian girl is getting away from abuse and is able to start a new life with Taylor. Taylor is giving the Indian girl a chance to get away

    2. I like agree on your statement because I feel that they are 2 people in the first chapter that are trying to run away. I also liked how you supported your information with facts from the story.

  14. I believe that the character that is trying to get away is Missy. Ever since she was young, she wanted a different life outside of Kentucky. Unlike most kids her age she wanted to learn and experience life. Missy pushed herself in school and at her work. She showed dedication and responsibility throughout her time working. Which helped her finally get away and move on from her life in Kentucky. Also, her mother was always there for support, which helped push Missy into continuing to fight for what she wanted. Missy ended up accomplishing a lot, she stayed in high school, she worked hard at her job, helped her mom with the bills, and learned a lot of lessons that helped her get away. Her mom always knew she was going to leave, so when Missy got her car she knew it was time. Missy then finally got away and started her new life. She even went so far as to changing her name to Taylor. It's a new beginning for her, and she can finally become the person she wants to be, with new opportunities waiting for her.

    1. I like this one because it is clear on why she wants to get away by telling us about her and how it shows where she is in life and what she is currently doing at the moment.

  15. I think it's taylor because she got out of KY. in the beginning of the chapter, she explained that everyone in her town is practically related, which implies that no one ever travels or goes out live somewhere else. after she quit her job from the hospital, she bought a car and traveled somewhere new, so she was one of the only people to get out of KY.

  16. I believe there are two characters who get away, one of whom was Missy because she literally was the one who separated herself from her original community in Pittman County, Kentucky, and always wanted to be someone of her own character, unlike the girls in her high school tended to drop out, have babies, and not earn an education, and also the Indian baby towards the end of the story. First pointing out Missy, by keeping this mindset, she had promised herself two things, one of which she kept and one she broke, with her own intentions of drawing to us some viewpoint on her character. She had chosen Taylor Greer, which she claims has some destiny to it, but also shows how she knows she has some importance in life, or some calling, to her true potential. In addition, she broke the promise to where she would end up, probably because she hadn't really liked where she ended up, in the vast emptiness of Oklahoma. On the other hand, we have the Indian baby, the one who is getting away probably from the family she had been in, specifically about abuse from the father. Based upon the marks on the little girl, we can infer she is getting away from the danger she was originally in, and is now in, more or less, better hands, with the care of Missy.

  17. I think there were two characters to "get away" in the story, Missy and the little Indian girl. Missy was one to get away because she got away from the life of most of the other girls in Kentucky. She and Mama always knew that the life of a pregnant was not for her which can be seen by a few quotes from Mama in the first chapter. Missy used her determination to graduate, get a job, and make enough money to buy a car and drive out of Kentucky away from the life that she knew she didn't want. The changing of her name really emphasized that she wanted to get away from that life and she did. The Indian girl was also one to get away because she got away from a life of poverty and abuse. The woman who gave her away obviously did not have the money to support her and the bruises on her body showed that the little girl was abused. If she wasn't given away she would probably have grown up to be used to poverty and abuse and she would stay there hopeless all her life.

  18. I think that "the one to get away" is Missy. She wants to leave Kentucky because its poor and she wants to do something with her life. She doesn't want to be like the other girls in her school who drop out and get pregnant. Missy has a go get it attitude and that will take her far. Missy worked hard to get a job then spend 5 years making enough money for a car so she could flee from Pittman County. Missy changes her name to Taylor because she wants to start completely fresh in a new place. The changing of her name shows how badly she wants to better her life.

  19. "The one that got away" was Missy. Shes trying to go to Kentucky because its very poor and she wants to make something out of her life. She's trying to be her own self, and not like all the other girls in her school. Missy works very hard to get a job and buys a car to go Pittman County. Missy then changes her name to Taylor and betters her life.

  20. Missy is the one who got away because she was able to break away from Kentucky. She does not want to be like every other girl in high school having babies. She also changes her name to Taylor because she wants to stat a whole new life.
