BLOG 2: Lou Ann Vs. Taylor

In chapter two, we meet a new character, Lou Ann.  Compare/Contrast Lou Ann to Taylor (Missy). What do they have in common and how are their personalities different?

38 comments:

  1. Lou Ann and Taylor have many things in common as well as many things different in their personalities. One of the thing the two have in common is that both don't have a father in this case Taylor's father who had left her and her wife behind as he didn't seem to care oh so much about them and Angel the husband of Lou Ann the father for the kid who is not born yet. Since the two don't have fathers they have to be independent and make key and important decisions on their own without any help or support from others. Also the two live or are far from their hometown Kentucky where they must live their life independently.
Some of the differences in personality Lou Ann and Taylor are is that the two are complete opposite people personality wise. Taylor is woman who wants to start a new life and new beginning by moving away from her home and makes decision on her own by for example raising enough money to buy a car and get away from her life back at her home. She wants a better life in her future hopefully for herself. Taylor received a baby at a bar that an old woman gave her while Lou Ann does not have a baby but she is pregnant with one and soon will have birth to it. Also Lou Ann's mother is not very supportive to her while Taylor's mother is very supportive and caring for Taylor and expects the best out of her. Finally, the fact that Taylor has the will to never give up in life while Lou Ann does not seem to care much about it and does not have the mindset about giving up in life as she just acts the way she is and let that solve the problem

    1. I feel that this response explains the similarities and differences between Lou Ann and Taylor the best. The response shows the most important similarities and the most important differences. The response explains the mindset personality difference really well, and is nice that they separate the similarity section with the different section with a new paragraph.

  2. Taylor and Lou Ann have almost an equal amount of similarities and differences. The similarities I found between the two are that they are both calm and collected when it comes to dealing with certain situations. For example, when Taylor is given the young Indian child, she takes her in and nurtures her as if she were her own daughter instead of overreacting and trying to get rid of her. When Lou Ann realizes that her husband, Angel, has left her, she doesn't automatically become upset; she looks at the situation in an even-tempered manner and mainly focuses on what he has taken because she learns even more about her husband than she had ever learned throughout their entire marriage. Although they are faced with different dilemmas, they learn how to be self-supporting. Also, I noticed that both of their hometowns are located in Kentucky
The differences I saw between Lou Ann and Taylor were the kind of people they were surrounded with. Taylor didn't have a father, but her mother was her support system and acknowledged any kind of achievement done by her. Taylor's mother was the type of parent to always be there and encourage her to follow her dreams. Lou Ann had an unstable relationship with her husband. Whenever they talk, they end up in arguments that go on and on. He would then start to blame her for thinking he wasn't good enough. The negativity around her relates back to the self fulfilling prophecy, and sooner or later she might believe that whatever he tells her is true.

    2. This is a good explanation between Taylor and Lou Ann because it gives a good amount of information within the two paragraphs. It is nice and ordered within the paragraphs and gives us a clear similarities and differences explanation between the two.

    3. I Agree with Alejandro. Taylors mother was the type of parent to be behind her daughter the entire time . Both girls men in there life left them.

    4. I agree with your statement and i also like how you support you opinion with examples from the book. I like how you put thought in your answer.

  3. Between that similarities with Lou Ann and Taylor, Taylor had gone out and has done mostly what she did by herself. Much like her, Lou Ann had done much things thing with herself as well, by traveling by herself from getting to place to place and taking care of herself. They both lived in Kentucky despite of Lou Ann currently living near the state. While in the end of the Chapter, Lou Ann and Taylor both have to take care of a baby making both of them becoming to live independent.
Nevertheless there were ways that they both aren't so a like with each other. Taylor, with her determination of leaving, had the most support when being in a life of independence with having a once full-time job from a Hughes White and the support and teaching on how to live a life yourself by her own mother. When looking towards Lou Ann's side in terms of support, she had nothing when she was pregnant and having the baby, her husband, Angel, constantly argued with Lou Ann more often than not during her pregnancy. While almost nearing the birth of her child, Angel had left her for good all alone by herself with the baby to soon come. With nearing the conclusion with her pregnancy she feels inside her that no kind of help from anyone, making her be discouraged and unready to deal with the newborn that she has to care for.

  4. Taylor and Lou Ann have many similarities as well as many differences. The similarities between Lou Ann and Taylor are that they are both very kind and helpful. For example, when Taylor receives the baby at the bar she doesn't complain or make a big deal about it, she stayed calm and took the baby in and tried to help it just like it was her own. When Lou Ann's husband gets badly injured she doesnt become all depressed or sad, she stays calm and strong and helps him in any way by going to the store for him whenever he wants and staying with him through the entire tragedy. Another similarity is that Taylor never had a father who left her growing up, and Lou Ann's soon to be born baby was left without a father as well.
Some differences between Lou Ann and Taylor are there personalities. Taylor has a personality that does not let her give up with whatever the situation is, while Lou Ann's gave up with the situation when it got hard. For example, Taylor did not give in to dropping out of high school and all that, instead she moved on and got a job to support herself. Lou Ann did not do anything to help her relationship with her husband after it got bad, instead she just let the arguing continue and now the unborn child has no father influence.

    1. Another difference is that Lou Ann had no support growing up in her life, while Taylor did. Taylor's mother was always there for her no matter what decision she made. She always supported her. Lou Ann has now no support since her husband left her, all she has is her pregnant baby.

  5. Lou Ann and Taylor share similarities in their lives. For instance, both no longer have a male presence in their lives. Taylor never had one, but Lou Ann now has to learn how to live her life without depending on her husband. Another similarity is that Lou Ann and Taylor both came from Kentucky and both left. This could possibly mean that they both have the same drive. They both want to become something and they knew staying in Kentucky would get them no where. Also, both women are left with children to raise by themselves. Lou Ann is pregnant with a child and no longer has a man to support her, so now she has to figure out how to support both her and the child. Taylor didn't even want a child, nor was she expecting one. She's left with a random Indian child who has problems of its own and she has to somehow figure out what to do for both of them. They both face obstacles they never expected.
Lou Ann and Taylor also have some differences between them. Taylor's mom was very loving and caring. She was supportive of everything Taylor did. Lou Ann's mother seemed to be the type to tell her child what to do and didn't approve of anything her child did that wasn't what she wanted. Another difference is that Lou Ann wanted to get married and have a child. She got married to a man who didn't really have much of a future and is about to have his baby. Taylor never wanted that. She didn't get married or have a child, but ended up with someone else's child.

    3. I really like this comment because it describes the chapter perfectly. It really digs in deep to the specific characters and helps me break down the characters in my head.

  6. Some similarities between Taylor and Lou Ann is that they both want to experience more in life. For example, both characters leaving Kentucky may mean they both want to learn more things about other places, or just more things about themselves. Also, another thing they have in common is that they do not have a man in their lives. Unlike Taylor, she never had one growing up. In Lou Ann's perspective it is quite different, making her character learn what it is like to truly be alone and to make her own decisions. They also were middle class citizens. Not getting large amounts of money to spend, but enough to survive with the basic necessities.
On the other hand, they also have many things that are different. For instance, Taylor planned out her life and what she wanted to do with it. She knew that she wanted to be married to a man with a plan, and did not want to get pregnant before any of this for a matter of fact. Unlike Lou Ann who married a man without a real plan for his life. Also, Taylor's Mama acted more lovingly and affectionate than Lou Ann's mother. For example, Taylor's Mama wanted her daughter to become a mature young woman, without children at a young age. Lou Ann's mother was very strict, and did not accept many choices that Lou Ann made.

  7. Lou Ann and Taylor have a few similarities between them. One of them includes the possible fact that they were born in Kentucky and left. Lou Ann already left in the story, but the story tells us how Taylor leaves Kentucky. Another Similarity is that they also share a children in their life. Taylor has the abused child, and Lou Ann is still pregnant with hers. They are also both very kind to others, even when they had obstacles put in their lives to bring them down. One other similarity is that Both have little money on them to support themselves or their family to live in the world.
Lou Ann and Taylor not only have similarities, but differences as well. One difference is that unlike Taylor who never wanted a child, but eventually got the little girl, Lou Ann always wanted a child with Angel and was happy to be a family with him. Another difference is that Lou Ann thinks very shameful of herself towards the end of the book because her mother always brought her down and said she will not get anywhere in life, unlike Taylor's mom, who was always proud of her no matter what she did, even if it was catching a fish the size of your thumb. One other difference is that Lou Ann is always attractive whenever she ISN'T pregnant, and Taylor is just an average girl who tries to fit in.

  8. Taylor and Lou Ann are very similar in their physical lives. Since both of them are living in a chaotic city with living pressures, Taylor and Lou Ann all choose leave this city and find a hopeful place to strive. Also, both of them don't have father leading their youth. Lou Ann is a women who has to deal with both matrimonial dispute and expending pressure, and Taylor is dealing with living pressure and moral doubt. Namely, they all have challenges that have to be solved. When Lou Ann goes to bed, her feet are so swollen she cannot get her shoes off. She weeps. However, when death took Taylor a hit, she also thus decides to leave. These two girl are showing the vulnerable group of this society and how do them deal with the plight. On the other hand, they also have different personalities. For example, although Taylor experiences the cruelty of the society, she doesn't know the feeling when she gets caught in it. Nevertheless, Lou Ann has already known it deeply and is trying to forget it. In addition, Lou Ann always worries about everything in advance but Taylor doesn't. Taylor decides to leave at the first time when suffering difficulty but Lou Ann is trying to help her husband and still endeavoring when he gets injured.

    1. Very good comparing and contrasting of the two girls

  9. taylor and lou ann are like total opposites. first off, taylor is in no way associated with the "trashy" girls in her neighborhood what so ever, while even though lou ann tries really hard not to be like them, she looked in the mirror and saw herself looking really trashy like the girls at fanny heaven. next, they both live in totally different towns. in taylor's town, everyone looks the same and everyone knows everyone else but in lou ann's town, there are many varieties in race. lou ann and taylor have very different personalities also. lou ann is kind of passive and isn't really sure or confident in herself and taylor is very bold and assertive.
they have some things in common, like how they both have a missing male figure from their life (lou ann w her husband, and taylor w her dad). they both have babies (or babies to be) that they aren't too sure they can take of by themselves.

  10. In some ways, Taylor and Lou Ann had some similarities. One similarity is that they both were from Kentucky. They both eventually moved out of Kentucky to travel to other places that they were better off at. Another similarity they share is the fact that they've never had a male figure present for a long time in their life. Taylor didn't have a father, because he had left them. Also, Lou Ann didn't have a husband because he unexpectedly left on Halloween, before she could give birth since she was pregnant. They both have their own unique personalities and they are very detailed in the way they notice and pay attention to certain things. They also don't have much as in material-wise.
Some differences that are very prominent is the fact that Taylor seems to be more independent with herself and very confident. She isn't like Lou Ann because Lou Ann is very unconfident and almost depressing especially with the way how she constantly dwells on the past of her husband, Angel. Another difference is their views of their future. Taylor believes to have a bright future and to stay away from pregnancy and trouble. But Lou Ann believes to have a great future with her husband and with her soon to be child. They both experience a new journey when their fate changes when Taylor has a new responsibility taking care of the baby, and Lou Ann has to take care of the baby by herself without a father helping.

  11. The similarities between Taylor and Lou Ann start with an obvious one, their hometown being in Kentucky. They are similar in a way that they are both pretty independent which is shown when they do a lot of things on their own. This seems like a quality that women really needed back then. Another similarity is that they are both seem good at keeping their cools under circumstances where I don't think most people would have. When Taylor is randomly given a kid she seems completely calm about it and immediately starts thinking about how she's going to take care of the kid. When Lou Ann realizes that Angel has left she also seems pretty calm and it's not until late at night that she lets everything out. I think the biggest and most important difference between Taylor and Lou Ann is that Taylor seems way more determined to make something of her life while Lou Ann just wants to float through life. It also seems like Taylor had a lot better support system growing up through Mama and that is probably what led to Taylor's determination and Lou Ann's lack of it.

  12. Taylor and Lou Ann have a very similar life. They both grew up in the same type of environment and in the same state Kentucky, where there was a lot of negative things shown and said to them by their peers. There was a lot of pressure on both of them to make the right decisions and to find their own path around the negativeness that surrounds them. Another thing that they had in common was that they both did not have good men figures in their lives. Taylor had an drunk and irresponsible father, and Lou Ann's father was not mentioned but she had a husband who left her when she needed him the most. Lastly one of the biggest things was that they were both left with children to raise on their own. A stranger gave Taylor a child who was clearly abused emotionally, physically, and sexually. And Lou Ann's husband left her when she was still pregnant with his child. So both Taylor and Lou Ann have to deal with a lot all by themselves.
They live a similar life, but their attitude and personalities are quite opposite. Taylor is very determined, bold, and knows how to speak her mind and stand up for herself. But Lou Ann is more laid back, does not stop the negativeness, and does not speak her mind or stand up for herself. Another big difference was their parents Taylor's mom was her support system and always believed in her, as Lou Ann's mom did not support everything she wanted to do and put her down in a lot of ways. Also Taylor had her life planned out and was always ready to more on from her old life and become who she wanted to be. Lou Ann was opposite she did not have a lot planned out. The biggest difference I would say was the Taylor never gave up and continued to reach her goals, she also made she her voice was heard, as Lou Ann just gave up easily on goals and dreams she might of had and no matter what was bothering her she would not speak up.

  13. Taylor and Lou are both from Kentucky. They both know what abandonment feels like as Taylor's father left her and her mother before she was born, and Lou's husband left her and their unborn child on Halloween. Taylor and Lou both have very strong views on how women should be respected, and they show that, by how they react to different scenarios in the story. However, both of these main characters live different lives. Taylor is barely leaving home, trying to make a life for herself outside of Kentucky, and encounters a child she takes up as her own. Lou has been living away from Kentucky for awhile now, and planned on starting a family with her husband Angel, but on Halloween, he left her alone. Taylor has to learn how to take care of this child given to her by a complete stranger, and Lou must learn how to take care of her unborn child alone.

  14. There is one huge difference between Lou Ann and Taylor. This difference is that Taylor is extremely optimistic, while Lou Ann is a pessimist. When Taylor was handed this child, she accepted and made the best out of the situation. When Lou Ann's husband, Angel, left her when she was pregnant, she handled it negatively. She shut down and lost confidence. Another small difference is the parents of Lou Ann and Taylor. Taylor grew up with a supportive mother who even though did not have a lot, she tried to make the best of their solution. Taylor's mom was extremely positive, while Lou Ann's mother was not. Lou Ann's mom controlled her life, and did not give her the option to make her own decisions.
There were an equal amount of similarities and differences. One similarity between the two women is that a key male figure left them. For Taylor, her father left her and her mother when she was young or maybe not even born yet. For Lou Ann, Angel, her baby daddy and husband, left her pregnant. Another similarity is that they were not the most privileged. They did have enough money to obtain the necessities, but there was a limit. They stressed to pay for these necessities, and could not pay for anything else. The next similarity is their background and drive. Taylor and Lou Ann both came from Kentucky, and they both got out of Kentucky. That shows their similar perseverance and determination to get out of their old ways of living and begin a new life.

    1. I like this comment because she used very descriptive words like pessimist and optimistic and confidence. This person basically describes the main reasons why Lou Ann is the way she is.

    2. I agree with how you said Taylor is optimistic. I think it has to do with they way she was raised. Her mother was more positive and supportive, while Lou Ann's mom wasn't.

  15. Lou Anne and Taylor share many qualities, as well as opposing characteristics. One example of the two having similar ideas was that the they were both coincidentally from Kentucky, their original home states, and had both left their family members to start a new life elsewhere, but for different reasons. One additional similarity I had found was that they both (Lou Anne to be expecting) have/going to have to take responsibility of a child, whom bears the makings of the burdens and sorrows of their fathers. What I mean is that they children's fathers at one point had abused/neglected their kid in some way, and now Lou Anne and Taylor must take care of their own respective kid/child.
The majority of characteristics I found between the two were mainly differences. In Lou Anne, we see that she had become pregnant and had gotten married, both of which were cycles of life that Taylor had not wanted to follow, and Lou Anne had left her job to take care of her husband, once again another cycle in which Taylor would not follow, but instead had prioritized her work and education more than her expectancy of becoming a wife and pregnant. Another difference I had found was that Lou Anne tended to play more of a passive role, expecting things to happen, and isn't trusted by her own, husband, and in Taylor, she was always wanting to help one way or another, trying her best, putting her best foot forward, and earning her trust from her mother as a strong daughter and responsible individual. One final difference was in the qualities of their mindsets. Lou Anne had a mindset of being negative, of being completely worried about the world and how she perceived it, whereas Taylor tended to stay more hopeful and positive in helping out those who were in need.

    3. I like this because I completely agree with you on the last 2 differences on how Lou Ann is waiting for something to happen while Taylor takes control and tries to make the bad situation better.

  16. Lou Ann and Taylor have many things in common but also have many differences. Both Taylor and Lou Ann are nice people but they are nice for the same and different reasons. Lou Ann is nice to her husband who does not treat her right and Taylor is nice because of how her mom raised her. Both characters end up having a child. Loa Ann child is not born yet but still with her while, Taylor child was given to her. Both characters did live in the same place Kentucky and they are both female. They both also were left with no man in their lives making it a “broken family” which I degree because you don’t need a wife, husband and a child to make a family. When it comes to differences the characters mom treat them differently. Lou Ann mom was negative to her when it came to marry her husband who left her. Lou Ann mom would say he is Mexican and Mexican families have a lot of children that they can’t handle. On the other hand Taylor mom was positive towards her and was helping Taylor shape the person who she wanted to be. When Taylor left she also had her mom positivity no matter what. Although both characters were left by someone the results were different. Taylors mom did not talk about her dad so when growing up it was only Taylor and her mom but that is ok because Taylor’s mom positivity felt like two parents. While Lou Ann was left by her husband by herself with a baby and on top of it all she did not even tell her mother because she is scared of what might happen. Lou Ann also chooses her life meaning she wanted to get married and she wanted a child. Taylor was not even expecting a child she was just going her destiny and her destiny was to get a child. Taylor also left Kentucky while Lou Ann stayed there.

    1. I like your response because I had not viewed this type of compare and contrast between Lou Anne and Taylor in this way, and this allowed me to see a different perspective.

  17. Lou Ann and Taylor have a couple things in common, a couple differences but there was also one huge difference that separates these two characters. In the beginning, both characters show of a similarity that both of their hometowns are in Kentucky. Taylor and Lou Ann both have to take care of babies and have little money to do so. An important similarity between these two characters is that they both learned to be independent. Both, Taylor and Lou Ann lose a man in their family, but they learn to overcome that problem and still have nice attitudes towards others.
A few differences they have are the facts that their mothers treat their daughter differently. While Taylor's mom is very supportive and kind, Lou Ann's is mean and never wanted Lou Ann to go out with Angel because he was Mexican. The biggest difference that stood out between the two characters though was their personalities. Taylor is a go-getter type person, who wants to have a whole new life to herself. A life that is setup for her to be a house wife, she wants to go out into the world and show the world that she can do anything. Lou Ann, on the other hand, is very passive. She doesn't seem to really care about anything. If she does feel offended or knows something isn't right, she doesn't let people know.
