BLOG 6: AMAZING TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

For this final blog, I want you to find the most amazing, powerful piece of textual evidence.  Create a lead-in and don't forget the end citation.  After this, I want you to explain why you believe it is so powerful and amazing.  I want you to ANALYZE the piece of textual evidence.

  1. Mattie explains the cycle of life to Taylor: "The old has to pass on before the new can come around" (80). I believe that this piece of textual evidence is so powerful and amazing because it can be applied to anyone or anything's life, whether it be a human or a plant. Good things fall apart so better things can fall together, and this relates to Lou Ann and Angel. In order for Lou Ann to have a positive life, she has to let go of Angel no matter how much she wants him back. It's a struggle having to let go of someone or something you love, but you know it's for the best and it'll probably have its advantages in the long run. New things will always be approaching in your life so it's good to go with the flow of the cycle. People waste their time in regret of their past and don't spend enough time looking at the brighter side of things. This quote from the book can explain so much in just a sentence.

    5. I like your response because it makes me change my mind about what I thought the strongest textual evidence in the chapter was.

  2. Lou Ann reveals how afraid she is to Taylor, ' " That's all it takes. I never drink. I'm scared to death of what might happen." I was interested. This house was full of surprises. But this turned out to be nothing like the cat. Lou Ann said what she was afraid of was just that she might lose control and do something awful ' (89). This piece of the book explains how serious Lou Ann takes life. She feels as if the whole world is watching her at that moment, and does not want to have fun or take chances. I believe that this is a very powerful statement because we all become scared at one point, and then we become so paranoid that even doing daily tasks becomes an obstacle course. Unlike Taylor she takes her life one giant step at a time, even if she's tangled up she knows that she'll get out of it. But Taylor on the other hand constantly keeps others opinions in her mind and her own personal opinion out of the question. This quote may just seem like a small saying, but if you really look into what they have been through, they will understand what it truly means.

  3. While Lou Ann and Taylor stay up all night and drink, Lou Ann reveals how she really feels about Angel's departure, "But still, you know, something went wrong. You're supposed to love the same person your whole life long till death do you part and all that. And if you don't, well, you've got to have screwed up somewhere" (91). Lou Ann has being trying to pretend that she's better off without Angel, but on the inside, she's still wondering if her relationship failing is her fault. Lou Ann has always been self conscious, so it makes sense for her to blame herself for Angel leaving. I also believe that this statement portrays how Lou Ann was raised. She had these ideas instilled in her. She thinks that all marriages have to work out and that she needs a man in her life to help support her, when in reality, that's not true at all. Lou Ann's personality is based on societies opinions. If she isn't a certain way, then she's wrong. Although I believe that this statement is based more on how she truly feels about Angel, I also think that it has a tiny bit to do with society's influence on her.

    2. I like how you analyzed the way Lou Anne feels based on her own statement, and how you thought this goes back to how Lou Anne feels about Angel.

  4. Lou Ann, an unconfident and cautious girl, reveals to Taylor what her theory of friendship is: "'I don't know. How do I know? Just something. I feel like the only reason I have any friends at all is because I'm always careful not to say something totally dumb, and if I blow it just one time, then that's it'" (89). I believe that this piece of evidence is so powerful because we learn a little more about Lou Ann. She reveals how cautious and careful she treats her life. It reveals to us how serious her life is to her. Opposite of Lou Ann, Taylor just tackles life and whatever comes her way. One example of this is when she receives Turtle and has to take care of her. Lou Ann takes everything so seriously whether it's the flatness on Dwayne Ray's head, her relationship with Angel, and now her theory of friendships she has had. The way she describes why she has friends is so negative. Maybe her friends really do like being around her, but Lou Ann sees it a different way. She sees the reason why she has friends is because she is so careful. This should teach us that it's good to be cautious and careful, but there should be a limit. Real friends would stick by you no matter what you say or do. All in all, from this passage we learn more reasons why Lou Ann acts the way she does.

    1. I like this comment because it talks about Lou Ann and her friendship with others which I never considered or even thought about. I also agree that this is a good example of textual evidence from the chapter as we learn more about Lou Ann and who she really is

  5. Careless and Lackadaisical, Lou Ann realized she was drunk: "Oh God," she said. "Im drunk." "Lou Ann, you've had three beers." "That's all it takes. I never drink. I'm scared to death of what might happen." "I don't know. How do I know? Just something. I feel like the only reason I have friends at all is because I'm always careful not to say something totally dumb, and if I blow it just one time, then that's it" (89).

I believe this is a powerful and amazing piece of textual evidence because this kind of shows Lou Ann's true colors and her personality. She is a woman who really does not care much about life and doesn't really want to do much with it while Taylor does. Lou Ann just keeps drinking and soon finds out she is drunk which I think shows Lou Ann's personality and how she doesn't really care about anything. She also makes irresponsible decisions by drinking in the first place and then later stating to the fact she never drinks and if she does drink she fears that she will do something awful in front of her friends sometime in the near future.

  6. When Lou Ann and Taylor are arguing about whether Turtle’s hard grip is a personality, Lou Ann says, “Well, no offense, but that’s not personality. Babies do that automatically. I haven’t worked in a hospital or anything, but at least I know that much. Personality has to be something you learn.” Taylor defensively replies, “And reading off a list of every name known to humankind is going to teach her to have personality” (86-87).

I believe this is a piece of textural evidence because this is the first time Lou Ann and Taylor argue. I also believe this is important because it shows a little bit of information on what kind of mother Lou Ann and Taylor are. Lou Ann Is the type of mother who is worried. Taylor is a type of mother who is willing to wait and not rush things when it comes to Turtle. This also shows how much Taylor cares about Turtle because Taylor has never thought of Turtle’s lack of personality as a bad thing, or maybe she is too busy to think about things in a negative matter.

  7. When Taylor asks Lou Ann what she means by doing something awful when drinking, Lou Ann replies: "I don't know. How do I know? Just something. I feel like the only reason I have any friends at all is because I'm always careful not to say something totally dumb, and if I blow it just one time, then that's it" (89). I think this is the most powerful piece of textual evidence because it shows the first time that Taylor can take a look at Lou Ann's different view of life. This difference is that Lou Ann doesn't want to take risks and is very afraid of making mistake. Taylor is the complete opposite which is shown when she leaves her home town with nothing but a run-down car and a little bit of money. Taylor may change Lou Ann's view of life for the better which I believe the story is going to about from now on and this is why I think this textual evidence is amazing.

  8. As Taylor, being curious and nosey, questions about the Spanish people who lived upstairs and responds to Taylor regarding a sanctuary, Mattie replies: "They've got [a sanctuary] for people too" (82). Mattie, who is both helpful yet a rebel against the law, is implying the fact that she is smuggling illegal immigrants across the border, and her courageous and helpful acts for doing this can also identify her to be a rebel against the law. The way Mattie presents her idea of smuggling illegal immigrants to Taylor allows Taylor to become sensitive on the subject of how Mattie does more than just fix tires, but to also recognize the title of the store, "Jesus is Lord's Tires," representing how Mattie, a Jesus character, helps transport, the use of Lord's Tires, illegal immigrants who live across the border, giving them a life opportunity in America. I believe this is a very vital part of the story because I think, sooner or later, both Taylor and Lou Anne will find the truth behind Mattie in what her true job is, and also see how Taylor and Lou Anne respond to this sort of difficult situation, whether to report, stay silent, or help Mattie. Mattie's role, on the other hand, has some sort of representation to modern-day society, how people are trying to be smuggled into the Land of Opportunity, hoping to make it big and have a good life.

  9. When Lou Ann was telling a story to Taylor about Angel, Taylor thinks " I liked this new version of Angel who would go out looking for shooting stars, but hated what I saw of him the next morning, taunting Lou Ann about something that had never happened" (90). Taylor is becoming very protective of Lou Ann and is beginning to look at her as a sister. She doesn't even know anything about Angel other than what Lou Ann has told her, but still she shows anger towards him. Taylor knows how clueless and sensitive Lou Ann can be and doesn't know how any one could take advantage of her.

  10. When Mattie threw the five-gallon jerry can at Taylor, Mattie said, "Knocked the wind out of you, but didn't kill you, right"(84). I think this is a powerful and amazing quote because it can be used for any situation. People will get knocked down in life, but it did not kill us and it will only make us stronger. Everyone will continue to face many hardships that may feel like it is the end of the world. What we have to do is accept that it happened and realize that we are still alive and healthy. With this realization we must turn the situation into a positive one, learn from it, and make it better for the future. So what this quote is saying is that turn every negative part of your life into a positive one, and use it to make yourself stronger as a person. In this story, there were many obstacles that the main characters had to face. For example, Taylor was handed Turtle. Taylor did not want a baby at all, but got one anyway. Taylor instead of being negative, turned the situation into a positive on and learned to like Turtle. Lou Ann was left by her husband Angel, and at first was extremely negative, but what she learned was to move on and learn how to be an independent women. This quote explains that they were able to get through the hardships and it only made them stronger for the future.

  11. Mattie tells Taylor what she believes to be the cycle of Life: "The old has to pass on before the new can come around" (80). I think this is textual evidence because this saying relates to so many things in the novel. This could relate to how Taylor changed her name because Missy was her old self and the old must pass. Also it could relate to how until Lou Ann can get past Angel, she can start leading her own life. Lou Ann must learn to leave the Old and take in the New. This piece is so influential because it asks you to except the change, and forget what has happened. It is extremely powerful and I can relate it to my life as well

  12. When Taylor is listening to Lou Ann to say her reminiscence, she said: "'I thought you were glad when Angel left.' 'I guess I was. But still, something went wrong. You're supposed to love the same person your whole life long till death do you part and all that. And if you don't, well, you've got to have screwed up somewhere'" (91). I think this is a powerful and amazing piece because it is the true feeling of a female who doubts her own life. Since whatever Taylor or Lou Ann they never experienced divorce before, so Taylor is puzzled for Lou Ann's thought, and however Lou Ann is confused, too. Showing by Taylor is easily thinks that Lou Ann will be happy for leaving a "disgusting" man, yet Lou Ann doesn't felt happy or relaxed by leaving him. Because as she said, she thought she will love this man who she chosen till to the end of her life. But however she left, so she loses the target of love and this also overturned her acknowledge of marriage. Namely, this quote shows that the perplexed feeling of women and the process girls adjust their thinking of love, which is amazing and powerful.

  13. Taylor asked Lou Ann why she is freaking out when she only had three beers Lou Ann replays with: "That's all it takes. I never drink. I'm scared to death of what might happen" (89). I think this is one of the most powerful textual evidence in this chapter because it shows how Lou Ann feels. As shown throughout the book Lou Ann goes along with what people say, and does not speak up for herself. This evidence shows that exactly she is afraid she will actually say what she feels. She has always held her tongue when it came to her opinion on most things. It shows how scared Lou Ann to show who she really is to people. There is a lot of power in what she is saying, I do not think Lou Ann wants anything to happen to her safe life. Lou Ann does not want to ruin the friendships and life she made for herself, even if it meant not having fun or speaking her mind. Overall I think this shows just how hard it is for Lou Ann to look past the negative in her life and look past what negative outcomes that might happen. Lastly, I think that since she admits that she scared, it could be the first step in becoming more open and positive about herself and life in general.

  14. During Taylor's care with Turtle, Taylor notices something during her times being with Lou Ann, "Lou Ann said what she was afraid of was just that she might loose control and do something awful" (89). Lou Ann has been so different when she's been with Taylor and forgetting about the past with Angel. Lou Ann also has been getting lots of support from Taylor which makes her develop a different character compared to the beginning, however she does give that type of hint that she might have that fear of seeing a difference in the future. In addition, she almost fears of what happens if she doesn't have the support that Taylor gave her and having to be in that life she had before with Taylor. So Lou Ann tries to be cautious of how things would be during Taylor's stay and makes sure that she would take out the other life she had with Angel.

  15. When Taylor asks Lou Ann what happens if she loses control, "'I don't know. How do I know? Just something. I feel like the only reason I have any friends at all is because I'm always careful not to say something totally dumb, and if I blow it just one time, then that's it,'" (89). This response is in Lou Ann's own words, perfectly describing her own personality. Lou Ann getting a new support system from Taylor, she still remembers the past. She feels that her was her fault that Angel left, and she doesn't want that to happen again with Taylor. This proves that she doesn't want to speak her mind because she is afraid Angel or Taylor might not agree with her and leave her.

  16. In the book The Bean Trees, Taylor says, "We were like some family on a TV commercial, with names Myrtle and Fred. I could just hear us striking up conversation about air fresheners(88)." This shows that even though Taylor and Lou Ann moved in as friends, Taylor feels as though they are a regular American Family. Taylor is the man, who goes out and brings in the bacon in the friendship, and Lou Ann is the female, stay at home wife. This shows that even though they are supposed to be friends, they both got what they didn't know they needed. Lou Ann wanted to be taken care of by a man, and Taylor wanted to be the responsible one in the relationship.

  17. "I realized exactly what was bugging me: the idea of Lou Ann reading magazines for child-raising tips and recipes and me coming home grouchy after a hard day's of work" (88). This just shows how different there personalities are but how well they work together, which is hwy Taylor thinks that they are a "family". Lou Ann has the personality of a mother always staying at home and taking care of the children, while Taylor is the one at work earning all the money to support them. Also after Taylor realizes this, she tries to do anything to change how the way there relationship is going.
